TOPIC: emersed glosso

emersed glosso 3 years, 2 months ago #1354

This isn't a journal (although I plan on snapping a few pics tomorrow along with some other stuff)

I just wanted to describe the way I'm growing out glosso emersed with what seems to be much success so far.

I got an order of glosso in a few days ago, and knew it would be too long before the meeting on saturday, and the resulting planting of my new tank on Sunday to just let it sit in the bag before I planted it, so I looked around the house...

I found a very shallow ~19" wide 4" deep, 4"tall clear plastic open top "box" that used to showcase hotwheels cars I think. My roomates dad is the president of the hotwheels collectors fanclub or some such. Anyway, I decided to try and plant this little box.

I dusted the bottom liberally with peat, and capped that with some SMS, planted the glosso in the normal, painstaking way, watered to the top of the substrate, and looked for a way to light it.

I had an extra ten gallon light with a 6500K flourescent in it.

I used Saran Wrap over the top of the box to hold in moisture, and punched a few small holes for Co2 exchange (doesn't take much) and so I could water it once the plants drank it.

I found a couple jewel cases (the ones used to hold CD's) and set them on top of the box in such a way as to make sort of light legs to set the light on.

I then plugged my light into the same timer I have all my other planted tank lights and my Co2 solenoid plugged into.

Progress so far is as follows:

Day 0: setting up and planting (described above)

Day 1: got home from work and topped off the water (not too much needed) Inspected and actually saw about three tiny little shoots with tiny little leaves. This could have already been there and I didn't notice.

Day 2: Got home from work and substrate was nearly dry! I immediately checked for leaks in my little plastic box. No leaks. Saran Wrap was still in place to hold in moisture. I turned to the plants themselves. Upon closer inspeaction there have to be at least 50 new tiny little shoots with tiny little twin-leaved glosso formations on the ends! Plan on starting to top off the waterline before AND after work to make sure there are no lapses.

Day 3: Woke up this morning and topped off water. Not as much needed as last night but that's no surprise, as it's only been ~12 hours and they were mostly night time hours. Will update Monday with this weekend's progess. I should be able to snap some pics of this on Sunday while I'm planting for the event.

I don't know if it's my little setup, or the plant, or what, but this little box of glosso is (so far, knock on wood) growing like mad! I'm excited to see if this comtinues after the new shoots reach maturity and send up new shoots of their own.

What is glosso? Maybe some pics will help me understand?

Glossostigma elantinoides

Low growing carpet plant from Austrailia. Needs alot of light and loves CO2

Over the weekend: Progress hasn't slowed at all really. New shoots every day, and some of the first shoots are opening up their leaves.

I used the few remaining bits of glosso I could find in the original bunch that hadn't died since when I got it to last night to plant out a very sparse carpet of it in my ten gallon growout tank to see if I would have the same luck submersed. (I had taken out all of the plants of three different tanks to redo the substrate and decided to use the hairgrass in the ten for my "event" tank so I had a spot for the glosso submersed test) We'll see how that goes.
