We got cupcakes today at the office for this month's birthdays, and I got to looking at the plastic container they came sitting in when it was empty and my little inventor woke up all of a sudden... and decided to make me spend more money to grow plants.
Now I have the perfect container for a small emersed setup of 12 pots of plants. It closes nicely, and even has 4 built in spots for watering so I never have to open it and it'll let just enough air in for gas exchange. Now I just have to figure out what I want to grow in there... Any interesting ideas? No carpet plants. I already have an emersed glosso carpet growing out, and hairgrass a'plenty. I'm thinking some very small rosette plant or something. I guess I could mix it up and do a few different plants in there just to test the different plants out... hrmm... *edit* I guess they ordered 24 cupcakes, not 12, so I have two containers for the purpose |

Inventive thinking such as this is what our nation needs to survive

my "inventive" thinking is usually born out of a love for my wallet's thickness. I can't stand spending money on something I just found while stuffing my face with free cupcakes at work :-p Jamie laughed a little when she saw me taking the leftover cupcake holder as she immediately knew what I was thinking, and said "you know you can get something almost exactly like that at a garden store for like ten bucks right?"
My answer? "Yup. I did know that." |

How about egg cartons? I'm thinking about you expanding in the near future!

I'm sure those would be great for terrestrial plants, but egg cartons are made of paper aren't they? Emersed setups have a lot of water sitting all the time. A bit much for the egg cartons I think. Although... there is one brand I've seen here locally that wraps them in a plastic container... but I'd have to buy that brand to get that carton lol. and I buy the cheapo eggs.
so... if anyone happens to eat whatever eggs those are... bring me the cartons lol |

Oh, they make them out of paper, styrofoam, and plastic. You can also buy in bulk. If you want biodegradable with calcium added, try using the empty shells!
You know, we do need a good plant supplier around here! |
