TOPIC: Brackish Paludarium Plants ?

Brackish Paludarium Plants ? 1 year, 9 months ago #29574

So, the wife said I can't set up any more aquariums other than the ones I have until after the baby comes. So, I'm going to setup a paludarium, which I consider to be a tank filled about half way with water and with plants growing out of the surface.

Does anyone have any recommendations of plants that can have their roots in water, but grow mostly out of water? I need them to be easily obtained at local nurseries or something like that...nothing too fancy. Also, I may be making this tank a brackish tank, so will have to take that into consideration.

Thanks for the help!

I see that it is an old topic, but did you find some plants to grow immersed/emersed in a brackish paludarium?

I ask because I am setting up a tank as a paludarium for some mudskippers. I think Java fern and Java moss should work, and I plan on having some Java moss grow emersed on rocks with water trickling down them. I cant figure out any plants to grow emersed, or brackish water foreground plants (since only a third of the tank is going to be filled with water)

Didn't find any in particular; however, when Steve Noble was here last year (and we're trying to get him to come again) and spoke on brackish tanks, he basically tried any and every plant and had some success with them. I recall the Java Ferns and Java Mosses did good. Also, the hygrophila type plants did well.

Thanks. I will try with Java moss, Java fern and Hygrophila difformis. The tank will slowly be changed to brackish water over the next few weeks. I will let you know if the plants make it.

I am also looking for some bog plants from salty marshes. Mangroves seem okay, but I have not seen any great looking mangrove plants in smaller paludariums.
